Neglect Causes Injuries and Death There are several types of preventable injuries associated with nursing home neglect. Pressure sores, or bedsores, can result from a lack of turning or re-positioning the resident in bed. They occur as a result of the weight of the body continually putting pressure on a particular area of the body. These sores can occur on buttocks, heels, toes, as well as other parts of the body. The sores usually begin as a reddened patch on the skin, and can develop into bone-deep, infected sores. These sores are preventable with regular turning and re-positioning of the resident. Another prevalent area of injuries is falls. Falls can result in hip fractures, head injuries, and a multitude of other injuries. Falls often occur when a resident is not properly supervised. For example, if a resident is not assisted to the toilet on a regular basis, the resident then attempts to toilet himself or herself and falls. There are numerous interventions that can be employed to prevent falls. Other types of injuries include malnutrition, dehydration, septic shock and aspiration pneumonia. Federal and state regulations require that nursing homes provide care that will help prevent these types of injuries. Reed, Johnson & Snider, P.C. helps nursing home residents hold nursing homes accountable to these standards.
